Mentors have career and/or professional experience and a willingness to listen and participate in a group discussion. Mentors play facilitator roles by providing guidance, offering feedback, and helping others gain insights to further advance their careers.
Examples of mentors from the past programs include:
- president of a consulting firm
- vice president of marketing
- executive director of therapeutic area research
- director of commercial product management
- patent attorney
Mentees have a career and/or professional development goal, or a readiness to work with a mentor to clarify their goal. It is important to keep in mind that this is not a formal networking setting – mentors will not find participants a job, but they will guide and support you along the way as you strive to attain your goals.

2018 HBA Regional Mentoring Programs

- The 1:1 mentoring model used by the HBA Europe region is where one mentor is paired with one mentee. This is an international program and, as such, mentoring tandems usually meet virtually (eg, Skype, Zoom, phone, etc), except where mentoring pairs may be co-located.
- The group mentoring model is used by HBA regions located in the United States. This is where mentoring takes place in groups (“circles”), with most groups made up of two mentors paired with four mentees. (Circle composition may vary slightly depending on each year’s applicants and their locations, companies, and mentoring areas of focus.)
- Mentoring programs may decide to offer one or more “virtual” mentoring groups/circles, as a pilot. If this option is available, it will appear as a choice in the mentee and mentor application surveys.
- Mentees pay a mentee program fee; this is separate and distinct from HBA annual membership dues.
- There is no fee for mentors, who volunteer their time and expertise to their mentees and the program.
- This is a members-only program; both mentors and mentees must be (or become) HBA members to participate.
- You do not need to be an HBA member to apply; however, if you are accepted into the program and decide to participate, you must become an HBA member prior to the program kickoff event.
